He was brought up mostly by his aunt and uncle after his month passed away when he was just 9 years old. He lived on their farm in Indiana. It was on this farm that Dean swung on a trapeze, fell and knocked his two front teeth out, leading to him wearing false front teeth for the rest of his life.

In school James Dean was a great athlete and played basketball, baseball and was a part of the track team. He even beat the county record for pole vault before he graduated in 1949. His first piece of acting work was in a commercial for Pepsi-Cola and the rest, as they say, is history.
