Has prom dress shopping got out of hand?

In recent years, the pressure to have the perfect dress – and be the only one wearing it – has reached extreme levels. One boutique owner, Kasia from Kasia’s Bridal and Special Occasion Boutique, a shop selling prom dresses, shared a story that shows just how intense prom season has become.

A Family Emergency

In mid-April, Kasia had to close her store for a couple of days due to a personal tragedy – her mother-in-law passed away.. Even during this difficult time, she didn’t want to leave her customers hanging during the busiest season of the year. So, she set up her store phone to forward calls to her personal phone. While attending the memorial service, Kasia noticed that one specific phone number was calling her nonstop. Trying to focus on her family, Kasia eventually had to turn off her phone.

What happened

When she returned to the shop and started checking voicemails and messages, Kasia discovered what all the chaos was about. It turned out that a mother was furious because her daughter showed up to prom and another girl had on the same dress as her. For this parent, that was a huge issue. And she was so upset, she called repeatedly, and demanded the store owner ‘fix things’.

Are We Taking Prom Too Seriously?

Are people taking prom dress shopping way too seriously? Of course, everyone wants to feel special and confident at prom. But expecting any boutique, even online like ohelloclothing.com/collections/prom-dresses to guarantee that no one else will wear the same dress might be asking too much. Many stores don’t keep track of every customer’s prom date or school, and even if they try, things can still slip through the cracks.

Social Media

Part of the problem might come from social media. Everyone wants that perfect photo to post, and some students feel like they need to stand out at all costs. Prom is one night, but the pressure in recent years to be picture-perfect can make it feel more like a competition than a celebration.
